Monmouth Surf 12U Wins All-Shore Summer League Championship
In its first season, the Surf12 team has won its first championship!
The girls worked hard since starting the team last winter and worked through some difficult tournaments, building experience and skills.
Those skills were put to the test as the Surf12 went into the summer tournament and started piling up wins, including 3 wins in 3 nights and a shot at first place. After a tough loss to Neptune, the team finished 8-2 and 2nd overall and started the playoffs.
In the playoffs the girls kept winning, playing mistake free defense in consecutive games against Brick and Eatontown to advance to the championship game. Red Bank beat Holmdel to advance to the final game, Monmouth Surf vs. Red Bank Thunder at our home field, Liberty Park.
This exciting game went to the last inning; the Surf was down by 2 runs. Runners walked, and stole, were advanced by great hits. The Surf got down to their last strike on three different batters, but thanks to heads up base running from third, the girls found a way to get 3 runs and win the championship!
From Coach Mike: “I want to tell the girls how proud I am of them. They played hard and smart throughout this entire Summer League and have made all us coaches and parents very proud of their accomplishments!!!!!”
Congrats to the team! Well done!
>10U News! 10U Monmouth Surf Reaches Milestone!
Sunday June 27th 2010: The 10U Monmouth Surf collected their first trophies in TFGSL travel program history.
The girls battled for the last 2 weekends, playing a total of 11 games in 90+ degrees with no substitutes and after running 4th in a very tough Carteret tournament last weekend, the girls succeeded in finishing as runner ups in this weeks Monroe Classic.
Despite solid pitching, both games on Saturday were losses. The next game started off shaky when the Surf fell behind in game 3 by a score of 11-1. What followed was exempelary team play and a never-say-die attitude as the Surf rallied in the last 2 innings to score 11 runs and win the game 12-11.
On Sunday the Surf scratched and clawed our way in the 4th-5th game to win 10-4 in a game that was tight throughout. In the next game, they moved on to knock off the number 1 seed in an extra inning game to get us into the championship game.
In the Championship, the girls battled for 3 innings before the heat and lack of substitutes started to take its toll. Coach Mike Lane said “We had fired our best shot for 3 and a half games and just ran out of gas”. The coaches also agreed that the girls followed through on what they have been teaching them, "try your best, never give up". The 10U Surf team and coaches all received runner up the highest place finish to-date in the travel.
Congratulations 10U Surf!
